GIS and Cartographic Services at Illinois State University

Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer technology capable of creating, managing, and working with geographic data.  Common GIS tools include data editing, management, geographic analysis and map making.  GIS is used by many industries and agencies to help plan, design and maintain digital information infrastructures.  Common users include but are not restricted to the following organizations:  agriculture, forestry, health, petroleum, city planners, environment, land-use planners, military, insurance, real-estate, marketing, transportation.

Examples of some of our past and ongoing projects:

• Health Sciences - Radon Awareness Program - mapping and demographic analysis of McLean County Radon awareness
• Health Sciences - Geographic analysis of membership attendance at the ILHIMA
• East Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging (ECIAA) - using GIS technology to promote the development of livable communities where citizens can age in place successfully across Illinois                                                                                                                          
• Archaeology - A GIS study determining the living surfaces of Gete Odena; multi-dimensional database management, 3-D visualization
• Geology - Geologic mapping across Illinois
